Student Life
ChES
The ChE department has a Chemical Engineering Society more popularly known as ChES that contributes greatly towards the welfare of its students. Primarily a student body, ChES facilitates carrying out of a variety of activities throughout the academic year. Every year, ChES organizes a ‘Freshers’ night’ for the new entry students as a way to welcome them to the department and to give them a platform to ‘break the ice’ and showcase their talent. All the senior students and the department faculty are invited to this event which makes it even more special. ChES also organizes various kinds of trips which include both industrial visits, where students get an opportunity to visit some of the biggest chemical plants in India and understand their operations, and off-site visits which are mostly intended for increasing familiarity and bonding between batchmates. Other activities coordinated by ChES are chemical engineering-related competitions during the IIT Delhi technical festival ‘Tryst’, student engagement in research projects under faculty guidance, and throwing a memorable farewell party to the graduating students acknowledging their success and contributions in IIT.
The sole motivation of ChES is to enhance student-student interaction, promote extra-curricular activities, and encourage the use of best practices in Chemical Engineering for the betterment of society and the environment. ChES also provides career advice through interaction with the ChE dept’s alumni who have moved onto greener pastures in the fields of academics and core/consulting/finance corporate jobs.
Efforts are always on to best serve the students. In case you want to volunteer or have any query, please write to us at chesgseciitd@gmail.com
Co-curricular Activities
Living up to its reputation, IIT Delhi provides many opportunities to student for participation in co-curricular activities, with a focus to develop the all-round personality of an individual and to strengthen his/her non-academic technical capabilities. In this regard, students have various avenues for exploration and culminating their interests. A detail of some of the clubs run by IIT Delhi is provided below.
- Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) club: Here, the students get together to build a Formula-one car and participate in competitions worldwide.
- Technocracy club: This is a platform to promote and coordinate research and development work by students through student-industry interaction. It gives the students freedom and opportunities to work in diverse areas of business, technology and existing industrial and national problems.
- Robotics club: This club strives to stimulate interest in robotics among the students of the institute. Members of the club represent IIT Delhi in technical festivals happening all over India.
- Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC): This club truly serves the purpose of IITs by promoting entrepreneurship among students. The club also runs a program called the Startup showcase, wherein, the students may apply for internships at startup firms, and the startups get to tell the audience about their business, and meet potential clients and investors.
There exist several other clubs such as the Economics club, Web Development club, Astronomy club, Electronics club, etc, all of which are intended to promote interdisciplinary activities. These clubs aim to provide work experience starting right from 1st year thereby uplifting the technological standards of students as well as the institute. The experience gained by students helps in smoothening out any rough corners before the start of actual internships or jobs. The culture in all the clubs is that of enjoying rather than competing. Summer Internships
The ChE department recognizes the importance of industrial training as a major opportunity for students to apply their theoretical knowledge gained in class to real-life scenarios. The early-on exposure to an industrial environment not only widens their breadth of knowledge but also helps the students to get a better perspective about their careers. At IITD, students are selected for training only at technical industries where they explore the kind of working environment and job descriptions a core company offers. Companies like Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Procter and Gamble, Reliance and Haldor Topsoe have been selecting students from our department on a regular basis and offering them pre-placement offers after being impressed by their performance. Training is followed by a full semester of Colloquium, where students present their internship results in front of their classmates and a panel of faculty members who give them feedback on their performance. This inculcates an atmosphere of peer learning. Practical training is compulsory for the completion of degree requirements.
