Student Exchange Opportunities for Undergraduates

As a part of the Student Exchange Initiative, there currently exist many attractive opportunities for IITD B.Tech. and D.D. students to spend a semester abroad studying in a foreign university. The total number of students selected through this process may vary each year depending on the conditions of the MOU agreement between IITD and the foreign institution. In the year 2011 alone, approximately 25 students went to the following universities -

FRANCE:       Ecole Centrale Paris

                     INSA (Lyon, Toulouse)

Ecole des Mines (Albi, Ales, Nantes, Nancy, St. Etienne, Douai)

CANADA:       University of British Columbia

                      University of Waterloo

HONGKONG:   City University

TAIWAN:        National Tsing Hua University

SWEDEN:        KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Information for the prospective applicants for the Student Exchange Program

Who may apply?

- Students with CGPA 8.0 or higher

How to apply?

- Obtain an application form from the Student Exchange Cell in the Co-curricular and Academic Interaction Council (CAIC) office at IIT Delhi

- Fill out the application form* giving details of four major achievements, e.g. participation and distinguished performances in extra-curricular activities like dance, dramatics, music, debates or sports, social service and outreach, organization of large events etc.

- Write a short statement of purpose (SOP) mentioning why you are interested in the foreign student exchange programme

- Return the application form and SOP to the Student Exchange Cell

Selection procedure

- The applicants are divided into small groups of ~ 20 students for a group discussion (GD) on any topic mostly related to current affairs.

- Approx. 40-45 students are selected from the above round for personal interviews (PI). The candidates are expected to talk about their motivation for going on an exchange program as well as describe in detail about the four achievements they have mentioned in their application forms.

- A list is displayed ranking all the 40-45 candidates who've appeared in the PIs

- The candidates are asked to fill a preference order of the institutions they would like to attend

- The foreign institutions are allotted based on the interview rankings and student preferences.

Points to note

- The number of students selected is generally greater than the number of vacancies available as, in the past experience, students tend to opt out at the last minute due to various reasons.

- The selection procedure stated above may change slightly from year to year. For example, in the 2010-11 selection process, there was only one round of selection where the applicants were selected on the basis of extempore speeches. The latest information will be updated on this webpage.

- The CGPA plays a very crucial role in the ranks given to the students. If two students have the same final assessment score (after GD + interview OR extempore), the student with a higher CGPA is ranked higher.
