With continuous increase in awareness for pollution associated with fossil fuels, there is tremendous growth in research in renewable sources of energy like solar energy, wind energy etc. Energy from these sources is fluctuating in nature, so there is a need of development of energy storage devices, in particular with high specific energy and power. Among available energy storage devices, batteries can store large amount of energy (Specific energy of Lithium ion batteries up to ~100 Wh/Kg) but have low specific power (~1000 W/Kg) and limited cycle life (~1000 charge discharge cycles).

Supercapacitor also known as Ultracapacitor or Electrochemical capacitor is one of the potential candidates to store energy with higher specific power (~10,000 W/Kg) and longer cycling life (~100000 cycles) compared to batteries. However, low specific energy (1-10 Wh/Kg) limits its use commercially. In this study, we report a modified hydrothermal route to form fluorine-doped, nanostructured titanium oxide with titanium nanotubes as an intermediate step. From material characterization and electrochemical performance of doped and pristine material, we observed that Fluorine doping of titania nanotube can be a good route to form defective, nano-sized TiO2 with good capacitive performance. Compared to pristine TiO2, it shows about three times specific as well as areal capacitance. Also, it has better cyclic stability, shows nearly constant capacity even after 1000 charge-discharge cycles.
