ABSTRACT
Additive manufacturing in general involves heat transfer, phase change and capillary evolution of the melt in comparable time scales. Often grain-scale simulations assume dominance of one
of the above mentioned physical phenomena and make simplistic assumptions, resulting in poor understanding of the micro-topology of the manufactured part. We present a meshless method
based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics that fully couples heat transfer, phase change and capillary flow of the melt of high viscosity. We present careful validation of each of these phenomena individually and present simulations that are representative of additive manufacturing scenarios spanning a variety of materials
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Prapanch Nair holds a PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (Dept. of Mechanical Engineering) and is currently a Post Doctoral researcher at the Institute for Multiscale Simulation, Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nurember , Erlangen, Germany. His research interests are in the field of development of meshless simulation methods for multiscale, multiphase flow problems.
