Fluid Solid interactions using a meshless numerical method
Dr. Prapanch Nair
5th April 2017, Wednesday, 4:00 pm, ChE Seminar hall
Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), a meshless updated Lagrangian method, is increasingly used to solve fluid mechanics problems involving interfaces and breaking domains. A version of SPH forked out from its traditional algorithm to account for incompressible flows with free surface, will be presented. By superimposing inter-particle forces, similar to molecular forces in a real liquid, on the meshless description, surface tension effect is simulated. The efficacy of this approach to simulate and understand flows where dynamics of a single phase is dominant will be discussed. A number of 3 dimensional simulations, difficult to achieve with traditional CFD approaches will also be presented.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Prapanch Nair holds a PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (Dept. of Mechanical Engineering) and is currently a Post Doctoral researcher at the Institute for Multiscale Simulation, Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nurember, Erlangen, Germany. His research interests are in the field of development of meshless simulation methods for multiscale, multiphase flow problems.
