Discovery and Development of Bedaquiline- A new drug for drug-resistant tuberculosis- Harnessing value of Innovation.

Dr. Anil Koul, Director of IMTECH, will be giving a talk titled "Discovery and Development of Bedaquiline"

5th February  2018, Monday 04:00PM, Seminar Hall, Dept of Chemical Engineering

Abstract:

India has a high prevalence of infectious diseases burden including those caused by certain viral and bacterial pathogens like tuberculosis. Bedaquiline  is the first drug in last 45 years to be developed and approved for treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis.  The discovery of Bedaquiline as a novel drug for treatment of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis has been hailed as a breakthrough and the drug is now approved by more than 30 countries in the world including US, Europe, South Africa and India.  This drug kills TB bacterium by a novel mechanism of action namely  blocking energy production ( ATP synthesis) of bacteria by targeting the multimeric enzyme complex  ATP synthase.  This drug is belongs to new chemical class name  diarylquinolines and is very effective in killing dormant tuberculosis baclli. In 2016, Indian government conditionally approved usage of bedaquiline in drug resistant TB patients under the national RNTPC program. In 2014, WHO put bedaquiline on its coveted list of "essential medicines". Bedaquiline is used in more  than 30 countries across the world till date.
